Lisa creates one-of-a-kind pieces of art jewelry using recycled precious metals from old or discarded pieces of jewelry and ethically sourced gemstones. Her process involves the ancient technique of cuttlefish casting that uses the internal skeleton of the cuttlefish––the cuttlebone––to cast the metal. The layers of the cuttlebone offer a rich source of patterns and textures that are waiting to be peeled back and discovered. Using these patterns and textures to guide her design process, Lisa captures them in hand-carved molds and casts them onto metal to create jewelry that celebrates the cuttlebone. Her pieces often incorporate gemstones as their focal point that are set directly into molten metal during the casting process. The stones have to be hard enough not to crack under the temperature of the molten metal, which is often in excess of 2000oF, and include stones with a hardness of 7.5 or more on the Mohs scale and a resilient crystal structure, such as spinel, sapphires, diamonds, and rubies. Each of the pieces is then meticulously finished by hand using traditional goldsmithing techniques while balancing the need to not subject the stones to additional heat stress.
